Winter star:track at the Isle of Wight Athletics Club attracted over fifty enthusiastic young athletes to Sandown during February half term with a Commonwealth Games theme.
Commonwealth Games bound Andy Frost, who will be competing for England in the Hammer in Melbourne visited the scheme on the last day and presented each athlete with their Norwich Union shine:award.
Norwich Union star:track Organiser Ray Scovell, who has coached Andy Frost since he was 11 years old said:
?The winter star:track scheme was very successful, we divided the children into teams named after a Commonwealth nation, which created lots of interest in countries they had never heard of before. A large number have made the step to joining the club, which is fantastic.
?Andy was really popular with the children, they all wanted his autograph. He came back to the Island for a few days from Scotland, where he has been training and competed against Mick Jones in an open competition we held on Saturday (where he set a new personal best of 72.38m), which gives him confidence going into the Commonwealths.?
Scovell introduced Andy Frost, now 24, to the shot putt at the age of 11, before he progressed to competing for the Island in sports:hall athletics and later became Under 15 National Sports:hall Champion for the shot putt in 1996.
He then moved on to the hammer with considerable success, winning the Island Games hammer title in 1999 and then his first AAA Senior title last summer, to gain selection for the Commonwealth Games.
Scovell added:
?We held a come & try it star:track session at the end of January, we had 71 children for the day! The session was funded by the Norwich Union star:track grant we received from UK Athletics last year, the one day sessions are proving to be a good way of introducing children to star:track before the next course.?
